Where do you do your work? Is it on your tablet, phone or laptop at the coffee shop? Many of us now work while we are on-the-go BUT chances are you still need some type of desk at your home or in a formal office. To create a work space that is super efficient, consider these points before you go shopping:
- Determine your taste. Is it rustic, contemporary, antique or garage chic? A desk can be made out of anything from an old door or dining room table to craftsman tool storage units with a connecting surface.
- Consider how much stuff you need to store. Do you still keep paper files and have a jones for stationary and office products? If so, make sure that you have several drawers or a coordinating file cabinet.
- Make a list of what you need to sit down and work without having to jump up and go on a treasure hunt. Is it a printer? Mail and postal supplies? Chargers? Industry periodicals? Fabric samples? The perfect desk should allow you to reach everything that you need to complete hours of work from where you sit. So, install a big bulletin board for samples and blueprints above your desk, put a book shelf with magazine holders for your periodicals and reference books next to you and your printer at arms reach so that you can plow through those projects without interruption.
- Find great containers for your pens, chargers and incoming mail. Use items from your past that are hidden in boxes in the garage. (Crystal vases for pens, leather trays for mail or retro file holders for current projects.) Display the minimum so that your space is uncluttered and you should be ready to tackle the work in a space that you don’t dread to enter.
