If you don’t have your important paperwork in order, February is a great time to tackle that project. Truly, it is a painless project! Either get a safety deposit box at your bank OR buy a simple fireproof safe at Home Depot, Staples or Walmart and load it up. Here is what you should include:
Birth and Death Certificates
Deeds and Titles
Divorce and Adoption Papers
Life Insurance Policies
Wills and Trusts
Social Security Papers/Cards
Stock and Bond Certificates
DVD’s or Thumb Drives with Photographs
Copies of Drivers Licenses
Copies of front and back of Credit Cards
List of Passwords and
Bank Account Numbers
Finally, stash this in a closet and be sure to keep the extra key offsite. (They usually come with two keys.) Your office, with a trusted relative or your glove box are all fairly safe options.
Having all of these items in one place will help you to find what you need easily, get out of the home quickly in case of emergency AND lock things up tightly should you go on a trip. $100 for the box and an hour or two of work goes a long way with this project!
