In the past 24 months I have helped 6 families prepare to move. I have started calling this service the Donate and De-clutter because it is a recurring request – and something that I really enjoy helping families with. In the photos above, 2 adults lived in each of the 3 different homes shown. When you downsize, you simply have to let some things go or you will be buried in your stuff.
People move for various reasons, the most common are:
- They are buying or building a new home in Park City
- They have a large family home in Park City and they would like to downsize
- They have storage units that they would like to purge
- They are moving out of state and want to reduce moving cost and simplify the un-pack
- They are preparing to rent their home and need to de-personalize it
I am sure that there are other reasons but these are the most common. These moves can be complex. Depending on where the family is going, there are often several designations for their things. Depending on how long a family has lived in the residence, the size of their families or the volume of visitors they entertained they tend to have ALOT of stuff. Depending on their attachment to their things there is often a great deal to donate, sell, recycle or toss. This can involves movers and trucks, appraisers, consignment stores and more. It is actually a great deal of work to give your things away.
My advice to you – if you find yourself in any of the above categories is to start the Donate and De-clutter long before the intended move so that you have time to decide what you are willing to let go of and what will make the move to your new home(s). When you wait until the last moment, you end up having to donate things that you could have sold, making rash decisions about getting rid of certain things you regret OR not getting rid of enough. It can be a very lengthy process but ultimately rewarding. Shedding possessions is liberating. You not only let go of things that no longer have a place in your life but you can make money, save money, help others with your donations and save yourself stress when it comes time to un-pack.
