This past year, over 25% of the projects that I worked on were a result of a family cleaning out to prepare for a move OR unpacking and settling a family into a new home, all with the help of Big T. For some clients, I helped on both ends.
When people initially call me, I often get this comment and it surprises me every time, “When the house sells, I would love some help getting ready to move”. Yikes! The idea of moving can be very stressful, especially if you have lived in the home for a long time. So, do yourself a favor…the minute you start thinking of selling, start packing.
The rules for prepping to move are much the same as organizing:
- Start at one end of the home and go room by room, drawer by drawer and closet by closet to eliminate the excess. Don’t hop around or you will get distracted.
- Evaluate each item to determine if you still need it/love it. If not,
- Donate, sell, recycle, repair, return or toss.
This process can be huge and overwhelming. It can also be liberating and profitable. So, take a deep breath, choose which room to start in and get going. You may like your house so much at the end of the process that you decide to stay!! (JK…)
